The sprinter Emil Jönsson had a great opening – but dropped like a stone in the last half of the race finishing 6th. Dario Cologna was the one closest to Jönsson’s fantastic opening – he was even fastest on the second split – and managed to keep up a good speed all the way to the finish. With this Cologna took his first World Cup victory in a classic distance competition – but probably not his last…

In the above Splitsbrowser-screenshot a flat line on a split means that an athlete is the fastest on a split. The steeper the line goes, the more an athlete looses on that split. Split 1 is at 1.7 km, split 2 at 3.1 km and then continuing at 5 km, 6.7 km, 8.1 km and finish at 10 km.

Axel Teichmann is getting closer to his good old shape – finishing fastest on the last split. Looking at the individual splits, we had Jönsson fastest at the first split up to 1.7 km and from 3.1 km to 5.0 km. Cologna was fastest from 1.7  km to 3.1 km and from 5.0 km to 6.7 km (together with Freeman). Daniel Rickardsson took the 6.7 km – 8.1 km split – while Teichmann took the last split as discussed already.

This time I’ve made a few more interesting visualizations of the splits as well. The first one shows how much in percent the top 30 athletes loose on each split – darker red means an athlete looses more time. Here you can see that many of the athletes finishing top 6 did well on split 2 and split 5 – while loosing some time in the middle part of the course.

This illustration shows how much time each athlete (of the top 6) is behind the fastest split. As you can see – all except for Jönsson loose a lot in the start of the race (start to 1.7 km) and most also loose at split 4 (5.0 to 6.7 km). This is actually the same position in the course. I have not been able to find an elevation profile of the course yet, but I’m searching for one to be able to compare these splits with the elevation profile.
