A bit more tricky than expected at the predictions for the overall tour in Kuusamo today. The winner Per G did not reach the 1000 point level of yesterday’s best predictor – but 949 points is still excellent – getting Legkov, Cologna and Rickardsson in the right order on top – and also the top three women right although mixing the order of Kalla and Kowalczyk. An interesting observation: Per G was the only one believing in Legkov – all others had Dario Cologna on top. Among the women, everybody had faith in Bjørgen.

Alexander Legkov was impressive in the uphills – and took a clear victory in the “Tour de Opening” in Kuusamo after skiing in a group with Dario Cologna and Daniel Rickardsson for most of the race. As expected Marit Bjørgen won the first Tour of the year easily – the excitement in this race was more about the positions 2 and onwards. The sprinter Emil Jönsson had a great opening – but dropped like a stone in the last half of the race finishing 6th. Dario Cologna was the one closest to Jönsson’s fantastic opening – he was even fastest on the second split – and managed to keep up a good speed all the way to the finish. With this Cologna took his first World Cup victory in a classic distance competition – but probably not his last…

In the above Splitsbrowser-screenshot a flat line on a split means that an athlete is the fastest on a split. The steeper the line goes, the more an athlete looses on that split. Split 1 is at 1.7 km, split 2 at 3.1 km and then continuing at 5 km, 6.7 km, 8.1 km and finish at 10 km.

Axel Teichmann is getting closer to his good old shape – finishing fastest on the last split. Looking at the individual splits, we had Jönsson fastest at the first split up to 1.7 km and from 3.1 km to 5.0 km. Cologna was fastest from 1.7  km to 3.1 km and from 5.0 km to 6.7 km (together with Freeman). Daniel Rickardsson took the 6.7 km – 8.1 km split – while Teichmann took the last split as discussed already.

This time I’ve made a few more interesting visualizations of the splits as well. The first one shows how much in percent the top 30 athletes loose on each split – darker red means an athlete looses more time. Here you can see that many of the athletes finishing top 6 did well on split 2 and split 5 – while loosing some time in the middle part of the course.

This illustration shows how much time each athlete (of the top 6) is behind the fastest split. As you can see – all except for Jönsson loose a lot in the start of the race (start to 1.7 km) and most also loose at split 4 (5.0 to 6.7 km). This is actually the same position in the course. I have not been able to find an elevation profile of the course yet, but I’m searching for one to be able to compare these splits with the elevation profile.

Adam from NordicXplained was best of the beta-testers in the WhoWins predictions for the sprint in Kuusamo today according to the unofficial results. It looks like everything worked fine, so we have already set up a new WhoWins for the distance race in Kuusamo tomorrow. Please join in on the beta-testing – and give feedback on suggested changes and/or bugs – especially if you find errors in my calculations.

The final version is planned to have pictures of all athletes (see to the right). The internal test version below uses pictures from FIS-ski (which I have not got rights to use). It you have non-copyrighted images of the athletes in the World Cup circus which it would be possible to use in such a service- please let me know. With pictures it is even more fun, I can tell you.
