Tour de Ski Lenzerheide: Preview & Predictions

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 30 Dec 2013@1:28

After two races in Oberhof the Tour de Ski moves on to Lenzerheide for a free technique sprint race on Tuesday and a 10/15 km classic mass start race on Wednesday. Both races will be very important for the long chasing start in Toblach/Cortina – especially in the men’s class it is important to get into the big groups which always form.

Whereas Marit Bjørgen and Alex Harvey are in the lead in the Tour de Ski, Johan leads the overall Tour de Ski XC-predictions after the two first races. There have been many surprises this year – especially in the Prologue – so Johan’s point score so far is only at 967 points. Still the lead to rem38 in second place is more than 50 points.

Set up your predictions here – or read the preview article below first:

Below the race previews you find tables with historical results.

Race previews – Stage 3, Free technique sprint

With another sprint race in free technique, it might be expected that the results will be similar to the results we saw at stage two in Oberhof. However, looking at the sprint course in Lenzerheide – this is a sprint course which will probably be more of an advantage for fast skiers who are good in downhill and flat parts. Instead of the tough hills up to the stadium in the end phase of the course as in Oberhof, the course features a tough uphill starting around halfway into the race – and then the last 5-600 meters are downhill and mostly flat (except for a small hill some 200 meters before the finish). Distance skiers like Martin Johnsrud Sundby and Therese Johaug who performed better than expected in Oberhof might get a rougher way to the semifinals and finals in Lenzerheide.

Also, the Lenzerheide sprint will be an opportunity for the skiers failing in Oberhof to show themselves from a better side – like for example Finn Haagen Krogh, Devon Kershav, Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen and Heidi Weng.

Favourites will again be Marit Bjørgen, Denise Herrmann, Ingvild Flugstad Østberg along with the Oberhof winner Hanna Erikson among the women. In the men’s class the Oberhof winner Calle Halfvarsson will try to defend his victory among Finn Haagen Krogh, Petter Northug, Federico Pellegrino, Andrew Newell and the “surprises” from Oberhof.

Race previews – Stage 4, Mass start classic

With the classic mass start race on stage 4 we will finally see a distance race in this year’s Tour de Ski – the skiers probably long as much for it as the spectators. Remember however that the mass start race in Tour de Ski is just as much about getting bonus seconds during the race as being the winner of the race. See historical results in classic mass start races at the bottom of this article.

Women

The classic mass start race have mostly been a fight between Marit Bjørgen and Justyna Kowalczyk the last years – with Therese Johaug giving a fight for second place. With Kowalczyk not on the start, this will probably be a fight between Bjørgen and Johaug – but look out for the very strong Finnish team which will give the Norwegians fight all the way to the finish.

Men

Alexey Poltoranin was in fantastic shape at the Tour de Ski last year – winning the classic 15 km mass start in Val di Fiemme at Tour de Ski – and also winning a classic 15 km mass start in La Clusaz two weeks later. Poltoranin showed good shape at the 15 km interval start race in Lillehammer in December, and should thus be among the top favourites. Also look out for Martin Johnsrud Sundby – showing top shape so far in the Tour de Ski – and although he has not shown top performances in the classic distance races so far this season, Sundby is definitely a man to look out for in Lenzerheide. The dark horse in this race is Petter Northug. Can he finally mobilize himself enough to take a podium place? Classic mass start races have not been his favourite lately – but Northug has surprised many times – will Lenzerheide be a step forward for the Norwegian?

The Canadian Harvey can be very strong at classic mass start races at the Tour – also look out for him in this classic mass start race. Outsiders are Daniel Rickardsson, Alexander Legkov, Devon Kershaw and Finn Haagen Krogh.

An outsider to note is the Kuusamo 10 km classic winner Lukas Bauer. Classic distance races is his specialty – but being a weak finisher the Lenzerheide finish might be a bit too easy for him to take the win if he can’t get away on the long uphill on the last loop?

Race Preview & Predictions: Tour de Ski 2013/2014

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 27 Dec 2013@19:30

Tour de Ski is the biggest highlight of the 2013/2014 season after the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. The Tour is a bit easier this year than the last years due to the Olympics – but it is still tough with the 7 stages in 3 different countries. The secret behind a victory is not to have a single bad day – no easy task!

The XC-Predictions were a big hit in the previous Tour de Ski editions – we expect a lot of competitors in the 2013/2014 edition as well. Remember that the overall Tour de Ski predictions are to be set up ahead of the first stage!

Race previews – Tour de Ski overall

Norway has dominated the World Cup this year – but is still chasing its first overall Tour de Ski victory – both in the women’s and men’s classes. Marit Bjørgen is more of a favourite than ever this year – can finally Norway get its first victory? Or will it be another one for the Polish Justyna Kowalczyk? In the men’s class it is more open than ever – with Dario Cologna not on the start a lot can happen this year.

Being in a Olympic Games year, the Tour de Ski is reduced to 7 stages. Two sprint races might be an advantage for the sprinters – but on the other hand the number of bonus points in the sprint are halved (30 bonus seconds for victory).

The predictions for the overall Tour de Ski are to be set up ahead of the Prologue – so it is time to take a look at the overall favourites:

Women

  • Marit Bjørgen: The biggest favourite due to Justyna Kowalczyk’s struggles in free technique this season – although she has had some problems up the Final Climb in earlier editions.
  • Justyna Kowalczyk: Has struggled with free technique this season – and with 5 of 7 races in free technique it might be tough for Kowalczyk to get her 5th Tour de Ski victory in a row. Kowalczyk is however very strong – both physically and mentally – so don’t write off the strong Polish skier!
  • Therese Johaug: Sprint is her weak point – the last uphill her strong point. Johaug has improved on the sprint – and if Johaug performs well and has luck on her side with respect to the grouping on the pursuit in Toblach, Johaug may very well be the winner at the top of Alpe Cermis!
  • Heidi Weng: The young Norwegian has been compared to Petter Northug. No big success so far this year – but she is strong in the Alpe Cermis. But can she deliver in 9 races in a row?
  • Kristin Lahteenmaki: 4th last year – and can very well fight for a place on the podium at the top of Alpe Cermis. The Finnish women are strongest in classic style – but still everything is possible in a tough tour with 7 competitions.
  • Outsiders: Kristin Størmer Steira (3rd last year), Denise Herrmann, Elizabeth Stephen and Astric Uhrenholdt Jacobsen are among the outsiders – it would be a surprise if any of these would climb all the way to the top, though!

Men

  • Alexander Legkov: Legkov is very strong in the distance races, but varies in the sprints. Impressive win last year – and has shown good shape also this year.  Legkov is one of the strongest skiers in the last uphill up Alpe Cermis, so if he is close before that race…
  • Petter Northug: Northug has not been as impressive this year as earlier seasons due to illness problems – but his shape is slowly approaching. Can he top his shape for the final stages?
  • Martin Johnsrud Sundby: World Cup leader – and good in all types of races except sprint. Will probably have a hard time coming to the sprint finals – thus loosing up to 60 bonus seconds. His abilities up Alpe Cermis are also not fully known – but definitely a dark horse who could make it all the way to the top!
  • Maurice Manificat: Showed strong shape by winning the 30 km in Davos – and is a strong climber. Not a strong sprinter – but is still one of the dark horses in this race.
  • Lukas Bauer: Bauer has two Tour de Ski victories – but has shown variable shape so far this year. Bauer’s way to victory goes through a good race on Stage 5 from Cortina to Toblach: Here Bauer can fight his way all the way up to the top and gain the time he has lost in the sprints if everything goes his way – and then even an overall Tour victory is possible with a good two last stages for him…
  • Outsiders: Finn Haagen Krogh, Sjur Røthe, Calle Halfvarsson, Alexey Poltoranin.  Maxim Vylegzhanin would be among the outsiders, but is not at the start list.
Prologue Preview

This prologue marks the start of the 8th edition of the Tour de Ski. The prologue is approximately the double length of a regular sprint – 3 km for the women and 4.5 km for the men. This year’s prologue is flatter than usual due to the course changes. In earlier editions of the Tour the seconds earned in the Prologue were “lost” on the pursuit the following day – this year the seconds will be a lot more important as there is no pursuit race grouping the skiers.

  • In the 2012/2013 prologue, Petter Northug did more than he planned to do – winning the prologue ahead of Marcus Hellner and Alexander Legkov. Dario Cologna finished 4th – with Ilia Chernousov and Alex Harvey on the next places.
  • In the 2011/2012 prologue, the big favourites showed their faces already from the start among the men. Petter Northug won ahead of Dario Cologna. The 2010/2011 winner Marcus Hellner finished 4th. Among the women, Justyna Kowalczyk won ahead of Marit Bjørgen with Hanna Brodin (Sweden) in third.
  • In the 2010/2011 prologue, Marcus Hellner won the men’s class ahead of a surprisingly strong sprint-specialist Alexey Petukhov (Russia) with Northug in third. Among the women Kowalczyk was again strongest – this time with Charlotte Kalla in second spot.
  • In the 2009/2010 prologue, Petter Northug won ahead of Marcus Hellner, Axel Teichmann, Dario Cologna and Sergey Shiriaev among the men. Petra Majdic won ahead of Natalia Korosteleva, Justyna Kowalczyk, Arianna Follis and Miriam Gössner among the women.
  • In the 2008/2009 prologue, Axel Teichmann won ahead of Dario Cologna, Petter Northug, Aivar Rehemaa and Devon Kershaw among the men. In the womens class Claudia Nystad won ahead of Arianna Follis, Petra Majdic, Justyna Kowalczyk and Marit Bjørgen.

Davos 30 km/15km: Highlight for interval start fans

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 13 Dec 2013@18:43

For fans of “old-school” cross country skiing, the Interval start races over 30km/15km free technique in Davos this weekend are one of the big highlights of the season. The last time we had this kind of “happening” was in Davos in December 2011 – with Petter Northug (Norway) and Marit Bjørgen (Norway) at the top of the results after the race – see WorldofXC’s detailed analysis of the men’s race here.

The race is skied on a 7.5 km track which is skied 4 times for the men and 2 times for the women – that is also a thing you don’t see to often in the World Cup today. The races in Davos are tricky because of the altitude of around 1500 meters – making the results a bit different from many other races. 30 km racing for the men with individual start at altitude will thus give interesting race developments and tactics with regards to opening speed. See the tables below for Davos results from the previous years (only one of the races was a 30 km / 15 km free technique race).

Most of the best free technique distance skiers are on the start in Davos, with Dario Cologna (Switzerland) and Marcus Hellner (Sweden) absent among others. But with this being the first individual start free technique race in the World Cup this season, the race in the mens’ class is quite open. Among the women the fight will probably be between the two Norwegians Marit Bjørgen and  Therese Johaug and Sweden’s Charlotte Kalla who has shown impressive shape lately. Note  that Kowalczyk has not shown the best results in free technique lately, and will get a hard time fighting for the victory.

Some thoughts and comments about the men’s race:

  • Johan Olsson (Sweden) is definitely among the big favourites – but is he in shape yet?
  • Martin Johnsrud Sundby has gone from classic specialist to free technique specialist – and now he tops the World Cup. How does he handle the 30 km interval start?
  • Alexander Legkov (Russia) did not impressive in Davos 2 years ago – but the Russian has shown many times that he is a complete skier who can do well in all disciplines. With a good race setup the Russian should be able to fight for the top positions.
  • Petter Northug (Northug) won this 30 km free technique race in interval start in 2011. His shape has slowly been building up according to the results the last weeks – is he there yet?
  • Maurice Manificat (France) was second in the 2011 race – will the French free technique specialist shine this year again?
  • Lukas Bauer (Czech Republic) is known mostly as a classic specialist – still he managed to take the 3rd place in Davos in 2011 and has shown good performances in long free technique races. Bauer showed excellent shape in Lillehammer – can he climb up on the podium in Davos?
  • Maxium Vylehzhanin (Russia) won the World Cup relay for Russia against Northug in Lillehammer last Sunday – is he up to it this weekend on a long free technique race?
  • Noah Hoffman (USA) had the fastest time on the free technique chasing start in Kuusamo – but the jump up to the podium in a 30 km free technique race over individual start is surely too long for the strong American?

Among the women, we have the usual favourites: The Norwegians, Kowalczyk and Kalla.

  • These longer free technique races are the best possibilities for Johaug to beat Bjørgen. Johaug has won the three last free technique races over 10 km or more – and thus Johaug is maybe the biggest favourite in Davos this year?
  • Marit Bjørgen has however had a very strong season opening – that means it should be quite open between the two Norwegians.
  • Charlotte Kalla surprised by beating the two Norwegians in Lillehammer on the 10 km classic race last Saturday – finishing only around 10 seconds behind Kowalczyk. Kalla could perfectly well take a World Cup victory again after a long break.
  • Kowalczyk is always among the favourites in the women’s class – but with her latest problems in free technique it should be difficult to take the victory. She is however very strong – and the altitude will probably work for her rather than against her. Of Kowalczyk’s 14 wins in distance (10km or longer) races in World Cup and Championships, 12 have been in classical style. The two wins in free style came in just over a week in February/March 2009, first 30km freestyle gold medal in WCH 2009, then winning the 10km in Lahti nine days later.
