Overall World Champs 2011 Predictions: Rauno!

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 06 Mar 2011@15:39

Rauno took home the victory in the overall World Champs 2011 predictions with 2454 points – 25 points ahead of Anders who came a lot closer with his victory in the 30km/50 km predictions. Third overall was Roar with Christopher Tassava in 4th.

In today’s 50 km race, Petter Northug did as most of the predictors expected – took home the victory. No big surprises today – except for Hellner and Cologna disappointing and Gjerdalen surprising with his bronze medal.
Thanks to everyone participating in the predictions – it has been great to follow the World Championships in Oslo along with all of you!

Race development 50 km Holmenkollen

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 06 Mar 2011@15:24

Not much interesting to report from the race development in the 50 km today. A tight race with some skiers regularly dropping off from the pack. With a good, old interval start race, we would have had a lot more interesting stuff to report on and analyze….

PS! Congratulations to Petter Northug for another gold medal.

Prediction results: 30 km Women

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 05 Mar 2011@13:59

Very impressive predictions by Маша и слоник who had the top 3 correct – the only one having faith in Therese Johaug today!  Even Størmer Steira and Kalla were on the list – but the 4th and 5th were interchanged! Prediction results are to be calculated for the womens and the mens race together – thus we have to wait until tomorrow for the final results for this discipline. It is still quite open after the women’s race.

Looking at the results from today’s race, they were very close to the predictions, except for Johaug who jumped up three spots compared to the predictions.

Overall results after 7 of 8 races

In the overall World Champs 2011 predictions, Rauno keeps his 6 points lead down to Mouontainmums with pally in third. It is going to be a very interesting 50 km tomorrow! Rauno’s tip for tomorrow is Northug, Hellner, Vylegzhanin, Angerer Olsson – whereas Mountainmums’ tip is Northugh, Hellner, Cologna, Piller Cottrer and Vittoz.

Splits analysis: 30 km women

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 05 Mar 2011@13:45

Therese Johaug did a fantastic race – crushing the others in the tough uphills in today’s 30 km mass start in Holmenkollen. As you see on the illustration above (see interactive version here), Johaug opened up a gap after around half of the race to Bjørgen and Kowalczyk.

The gap was constant for one loop, and the last time up the long hill towards Frognerseteren Johaug increased the gap from around 20 seconds to more than a minute.

Explanation of the illustration: A flat line means that a skier had the best time on that split – when the line goes down, a skier looses time. There are a total of 25 splits, each split representing between 1 and 2 kilometers of skiing.

Holmenkollen 50 km: 3D course preview!

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 05 Mar 2011@12:21

The Holmenkollen 50 km is probably the toughest 50 km track in the XC Skiing World Cup circus – with 1998 meter of ascent. Here is a 3D course preview – see what the skiers have to go through six times!

Just to put the course into perspective: How much is really 1998 meters? Compare it to the famous L’Alp-d’Huez – the Queen stage of Tour de France. The L’Alp-d’Huez has around 1100 meters of ascent…

1998 meter of ascent

The Holmenkollen 50 km track is actually 53 kilometers long – with a total of 1998 meters of ascent. That is only 2 meters less than the maximum allowed by FIS (maximum allowed is 2000 meters, rules changed in 2004). Below you see the course profile for each of the six loops. Each loop has 333 meter of ascent – more than half of the ascent coming in the first 3 kilometers of the loop.

Toughest 50 km courses in World Champs/Olympics

Here is the list of the toughest 50 km courses in the World Championships/Olympics.

  1. 1998 meter, nye Holmenkollen (52 860 meter long)
  2. 1810 meter, OL Torino
  3. 1794 meter, OL i Salt Lake City
  4. 1760 meter, OL i Vancouver
  5. 1759 meter, VM i Liberec
  6. 1713 meter, Holmenkollen (2007 edition of the course)
  7. 1698 meter, Granåsen

Interesting race development: Relay men

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 04 Mar 2011@14:39

A lot happened during the first legs of the mens relay – take a look at the race development graph for the mens relay to see how it all developed (see also interactive version of the race development graph). There are 10 splits for each leg – and a flat line means that a skier had the best time on that split. Take a look at how Norway and Germany got into the race again after loosing time – and how Russia’s Legkov lost it big time on the third leg!

Some observations:

  • Martin Johnsrud Sundby lost 20+ seconds on the last part of the second leg – but was saved by Rønning on the third leg.
  • Södergren and Gjerdalen ski very slowly at the first part of the third leg – being caught by a big group of teams. On the other hand, Legkov who was central in chasing down the two Scandinavians in the lead gets crushed in the last part of the leg – loosing a whooping 2+ minutes!
  • Germany was far off already halfway through the first leg, but got back into the lead after the slow skiing of Södergren and Gjerdalen on the first half of the third leg.
  • Finland, Japan and Italy do a very good race on the  second leg – bringing them up towards the lead group again.

Preview 50 km mass start men

(Note! This is a copy of the prediction preview article from here!)

Looking at the 50 km mass start events in free technique  in the World Cup and World Champs the last years, the Norwegian skier Northug has won the two last (Holmenkollen and Liberec) whereas Giorgio Di Centa (ITA)  won the one before (Pragelato). The 50 km mass starts have usually been decided in a sprint finish between several skiers, but not so in Holmenkollen last year. In that exciting mass start event Northug and Pietro Piller Cottrer (ITA)  got away from the rest, and decided the fight for gold between them. Down to Vincent Vittoz (FRA) in third there was a full 30 seconds. With the tough course in Holmenkollen – nearly 2000 meter of ascent – we might very well see one or a few skiers get away again.

The following are the favourites on the 50 km:

  • Petter Northug (NOR) is the big favourite – if he has power left after a long championships. The course is tough, but the fast Norwegian showed last year that he can win even the toughest 50 km race.
  • Maxim Vylegzhanin (RUS) was very strong at the 30 km pursuit – and showed with his silver medal on the 50 km mass start free technique at the World Champs in Liberec in 2009 that the 50 km is no problem for him. Count this strong Russian among the big favourites.
  • Tobias Angerer (GER) showed at the 30 km pursuit that he found his shape for Oslo – and can be a very dangerous man on a 50 km race. 3rd spot in Liberec in 2009 on the 50 km free mass start and 2nd spot in Trondheim in 2009 on the 50 km classic mass start.
  • The Swedish athletes will surely be hungry to show that what they can on the 50 km after waxing trouble in several races earlier in the championships. Marcus Hellner, Anders Södergren and Johan Olsson were all top 10 in Oslo at the 50 km mass start free technique last year.
  • Lukas Bauer (CZE) can be very strong in a 50 km, but free technique is not his favourite style and he is a lot stronger in interval start than in mass start. However, the course in Holmenkollen is so tough that he might manage to get away if he finds his top shape in time for Sunday…
  • Pietro Piller Cottrer (ITA) was very strong in Oslo last year, but has not been on the podium in the World Cup since. He finished 13th on the pursuit last weekend, and showed that his shape is not too bad. A man to look out for on the 50 km.
  • Vincent Vittoz (FRA) is a strong 50 km free technique skier who has had a lot of injury problems this year. He might surprise and even ski all the way to the top if he finds his shape in time for Sunday.
  • Dario Cologna (SUI) has not had a great championships – and the 50 km has not usually been his best discipline. However, don’t forget him among the favourites.

In addition to these, Dolidovich (BUL) , the Italian skiers and the Canadians (including Babikov) should not be forgotten. All in all, this is quite an open and exciting race  - thanks to the tough course profile.

Below you see the top 10 in the last 50 km races in the World Cup, World Champs and Olympics to help you identify your favourites.

50 km mass start: Here are the favourites – who do you think wins?

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 04 Mar 2011@7:30

The 50 km race on the last day of the World Championships is the “king distance” of the championships – it is the toughest skier who is on top of the podium on this day. In Oslo the 50 km is a mass start race in free technique. That should be an advantage for Petter Northug, but still the race is quite open.

Looking at the 50 km mass start events in free technique  in the World Cup and World Champs the last years, the Norwegian skier Northug has won the two last (Holmenkollen and Liberec) whereas Giorgio Di Centa (ITA)  won the one before (Pragelato).

30 km mass start: Here are the top favourites – who takes the gold?

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 04 Mar 2011@6:00

The long, tough 30 km mass start race finishing the World Championships in Oslo for the women skiers might just be the race where Marit Bjørgen (NOR) is beaten. It has been a long week for Bjørgen, and Kowalczyk (POL), Johaug (NOR), Størmer Steira (NOR), Kalla (SWE) and the  rest of the start field are surely hungry to beat the queen of Holmenkollen in their last chance.

Here are the biggest favourites:

  • After the last week in Holmenkollen with 4 gold medals so far, Marit Bjørgen is surely still the big favourite. Can she repeat the record 5 gold medal of Jelena Välbe from Trondheim 1997? Still, Bjørgen has shown some signs of getting tired – and a 30 km race at the end of a championship is mentally demanding.
  • Justyna Kowalczyk got very close to Bjørgen at the 10 km classic, and had a very good second leg in the relay for Poland. The 30 km free technique with mass start is a good discipline for the Polish skier – she won the gold medal at the Olympics in Vancouver in 2010 in this discipline ahead of Marit Bjørgen.
  • Kristin Størmer Steira has the 30 km free as one of her best disciplines – finishing 2nd on this discipline  in the World Cup races in Holmenkollen last winter, 1.2 seconds behind Bjørgen. The course is tough enough to make it possible for Steira to decide the race ahead of the final sprint –  if her shape is good enough. Størmer Steira did a good 3rd leg for Norway in the relay on Thursday – and showed that this might just go her way…
  • Therese Johaug can be very strong on the 30 km – the 30 km (although classic style) was were Johaug made her big breakthrough at the World Champs in Japan back in 2007 with a bronze medal.  Johaug is surely a medal aspirant, but gold might be a bit too far up?
  • This has not been Charlotte Kalla’s championships, but the strong Swede with free technique as her speciality is one of the women who can win the 30 km race in Holmenkollen.

There are a few more who might be in for a fight for the medals. Aino-Kaisa Saarinen does not have the 30 km free technique as her favourite discipline, but should still be counted among the medal favourites. Anna Haag, Arianna Follis, Marianna Longa and Nicole Fessel can also be included among the skiers fighting for a medal.

Below you see the top 10 in the last 30 km races in the World Cup, World Champs and Olympics to help you identify your favourites.

Race development graph: Women relay

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 03 Mar 2011@16:11

Here you see the race development graph for the womens relay. There are 5 splits for each leg – and a flat line means that a skier had the best time on that split. You can see how Norway decided the race already at the end of the second leg.
