Tour de Ski Queen Stage 2014: Analysis

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 03 Jan 2014@14:31

Sundby started around 30 seconds ahead – and managed to build up a 50-55 seconds gap to a six man group consisting of Northug, Harvey, Halfvarsson, Legkov and Jespersen in the first 5-6 km of the race. The graphical analysis above shows the development from start until finish.

As you can see from the illustration, the six man group did not cooperate well, and the gap steadily increased second by second. After around 10-12 km the Austrican Duerr – starting at 2:11 in 34th spot - surprisingly came up to the 6 man group and increased the speed in the group for some kilometers – chasing the gap down to around 1:10. This gap stayed constant until the sprint in the group started a kilometer before the finish. Northug finished 2nd – 58 seconds behind Sundby. Adding up the bonus seconds (15 seconds for victory, 10 seconds for 2nd place, 5 seconds for third place), that means that Sundby now has a 1:03 lead.

Sundby did a very good race at the front of the field – but if the chasing group would have cooperated better, it should have been possible to chase down at least another 20-25 seconds on Sundby. However, as we have seen earlier on the Cortina-Toblach stage it is not easy to get a good cooperation going – especially not when there are team mates of the leader in the following group (Jespersen and Northug).

- I did not race full speed, but I tried to keep a steady pace over 35 km. I gambled that I had enough strength to go all the way to the finish, Sundby said after his race. - Now I am completely finished.

The question is if this race has cost Sundby more than the others in the chasing group? We will see tomorrow at the 10 km classic!

The illustration above is a graphical illustration of the race development based on the split times. A line which is flat means that a skier has the same time as Petter Northug for the split (Northug’s line is flat all the way). A line which goes down represents slower speed – a line which goes up represents faster speed. Key moments are marked on the illustration. See the full interactive illustration here.

Nearly melted into one

The second big group was partly lead by the Norwegians Tønseth, Krogh and Gjerdalen – and partly by Dotzler among others. Before Duerr caught up with the first group it looked like the two groups would melt into one, big group – but when Duerr got up to the first group the speed increased in the first group – and the gap between the groups steadily increased. In the end the group was at around 1:55 behind Sundby. The disappointment of the day was Manificat – the winner of the Davos 30 km – who had to let the second group go and lost a lot of time. A pity for Manificat who usually has his strength in the Final Climb!

Further down we had the third big group with Noah Hoffman as the fastest racer. First to the finish in this group was Dyrhaug at 3:05.

GPS comparison

Below you see some simple GPS-comparisons based on the live GPS-tracking. There were unfortunately some holes in the GPS coverage due to the phone coverage in the area, and thus the GPS-data do not give a complete picture of the development in the race. You can however see how the gap between Sundby and the first big group was at its largest around 13.0 km.

Tour de Ski Toblach Women 15km 2014: Analysis

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 03 Jan 2014@13:08

Astrid Jacobsen did an impressive race and only lost a few seconds to Therese Johaug who passed Niskanen and is now in second  spot overall. Niskanen was eventually also passed by Kylloenen. The above race graph shows the key moments in the race development.

The illustration above is a graphical illustration of the race development based on the split times. A line which is flat means that a skier is the fastest skier for the split. A line which goes down represents slower speed – a line which goes up represents faster speed. Key moments are marked on the illustration.

As you can see from the illustration, Johaug is fastest in the first fart of the race (horizontal line) – taking some seconds on Jacobsen and the rest of the field. On the second and third loop the Lahteenmaki group is the fastest – starting out as a three-skier group (Lahteenmaki, Jean and Vrabcova-Nyltova), and eventually catching Weng at the start of the third loop.

Steira/Stephen/Diggins group

The other fast group in this race is the group consisting of Steira, Stephen and Diggins among others – however they lost time to the Lahteenmaki group in all of the race.

Race Preview & Predictions: Tour de Ski Queen Stage 2014

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 02 Jan 2014@20:20

The long stage from Cortina to Toblach in the men’s class is the Queen stage of Tour de Ski – with more than 30 kilometers of skating on an A-to-B course, this stage can shake up the overall standings considerably like it did in earlier years – see the 2013, 2012 and 2011 analysis here.  In the women’s class we will also have a very interesting pursuit race – although the women will “only” ski a 15 km race on a 5 km course which is skied 3 times.

Cologna decided the Tour de Ski at the Cortina-Toblach stage in 2011 and 2012 by arriving alone in Toblach more than a minute ahead of the closest follower. In 2013 five skiers started within 30 seconds – and four of them (Legkov, Cologna, Northug and Vylegzhanin) finished together with a nearly 90 second gap to the rest of the field. These four skiers were also the ones fighting for the overall Tour win in 2013.

(For discussion of the women’s race – see below the men)

Can Sundby race alone at the front?

As we have seen in previous editions of Tour de Ski, if there is no cooperation in the chasing group, the leader can get away – and more and more skiers can come up from behind

This year Martin Johnsrud Sundby is in a similar situation as Cologna in 2011 and 2012 – although the 32 second gap down to Swedish Halfvarsson in second might be too small for the Norwegian Tour de Ski and World Cup leader. The most probably scenario for this years race is that the 6 skiers who are between 32 and 61 seconds behind – Halfvarsson (+32), Harvey (+35), Northug (+37), Chernousov (+43), Poltoranin (+53) and Legkov (+61) quite soon form a group which tries to chase down Sundby at the front. The strong free technique skier Jespersen (+72) and a few others (Tscharnke at +79, Haagen Krogh and Bing at +81, Belov at +83 …) might manage to get up to Legkov before he catches the others, but there is a good chance that Legkov is strong enough to get away – and that the initial “cut” will be after Legkov and we will have a six man group chasing the leader.

20-30 man big group?

As we have seen in previous editions of Tour de Ski, if there is no cooperation in the chasing group, the race leader can get away – and/or more and more skiers can come up from behind. Legkov and Chernousov said in an interview with NRK that they will work together to chase down Sundby. - I think it will be not so hard. He is alone, and has only 30 seconds, Chernousov said with a confident smile. - We will catch him. Of course it will be difficult for him. He knows that we are behind him.

Looking further down at the start list, we find the two French “locomotives” Gaillard at 1:50 and Manificat at 1:55 – both very strong in this type of races. Can they get all the way up to the Legkov-group – and even up to the lead? Depending on how the race develops and how well the skiers word together, we could even get a 20-30 man group coming together to Toblach – or Sundby alone. It will definitely be an interesting race!

Here is the complete startlist / tour standings.

2012/2013 details: Groups

Five skiers started within 30 seconds – Vylegzhanin first with Cologna, Northug, Harvey and Legkov  following. Harvey used so much power to get up to the front that he could not keep  up with the other four – and in the end the remaining four finished together with a nearly 90 second gap to the rest of the field. The leading group slowed down the last kilometers – letting the other groups catch up some time. Northug won the sprint on the homestretch ahead of Legkov 0.7 seconds behind, and Cologna in third was 0.9 seconds back.

Harvey on the other hand was caught by the Chernousov/Bauer/Hellner group – turning the trio into another quartet around 15 km into the race. This group gradually lost time to the leading quartet, finishing 1:25 behind the leaders (1:40 including bonus seconds). The rest of the skiers did not make the cut into the first two groups – and 16 of them gathered into a big third group. This third group raced very fast in the last 7-8 km of the race – and in the end this group finished only 20 seconds behind the Chernousov/Bauer/Hellner/Harvey group.

2011/2012 details: Awesome Cologna – three big groups

Petter Northug started the day 13.5 seconds behind Dario Cologna. Northug started out fast and caught Cologna after a few kilometers. The Norwegian was however punished for his tough start, and lost more than a minute to Cologna while waiting out Legkov (RUS). Behind Northug and Legkov the strongest group of the day was formed – the trio Hellner (SWE), Manificat (FRA) and Kershaw (CAN) – all three starting more than 2 minutes behind Cologna. They steadily gained time on Cologna until they caught Northug and Legkov around 20 km – having caught up with more than a minute at that time. Then they slowed down to the speed of Northug/Legkov, and the group finished down 1:16 from Cologna. If the group had not stopped cooperating when catching Northug/Legkov, they would probably have managed to gain even more time on Cologna. Marcus Hellner and Maurice Manificat – the two fastest skiers of the day – both gained around 1:30 on Cologna in the end.

Interesting fact: No single skiers except for Cologna survived on their own their own throughout the race. The rest of the skiers fighting in the top packed themselves into only three big groups.

Illustration Tour de Ski 2011/2012: Splitsbrowser where comparison is done to Dario Cologna. A line which is flat means the same time as Cologna. A line which goes down represents slower speed – a line which goes up represents faster speed. You can see where the grouping occured by observing where the lines get together.

2010/2011 details: Large group – no cooperation in the end

Looking back to the 2010/2011 edition of Tour de Ski, all skiers in the Top 30 except for Dario Cologna (SUI) and Marcus Hellner (SWE) in the lead got sucked up by three big groups (see article including graphical illustration here). The biggest group which Petter Northug (NOR) was part of gained time on Cologna throughout most of the race – gaining nearly 45 seconds from 7 km up to 27 km. However, the group had problems cooperating in the last part of the downhill down to Toblach, loosing more than half of what they had worked hard on gaining in the first part of the race. When the group got too big, the skiers did not manage to cooperate anymore.

Illustration Tour de Ski 2010/2011: Splitsbrowser where comparison is again done against Dario Cologna. Note that the starting split not correct due to the way the time keeping is reported.

2009/2010 details: Group of six from the start

In the 2009/2010 edition, there was just over 16 seconds separating the top five Hellner (SWE), Østensen (NOR), Northug, Cologna and Teichmann (GER) at the start. Østensen was dropped early, and Heikkinen (FIN) and Gaillard (FRA) caught up with the remaining four after 15km. The leading six became five as they approached the town of Toblach where Teichmann fell off the pace. In the end Northug won the finish sprint ahead of Cologna and Hellner.

Women: Strong field chasing Jacobsen

Jacobsen will have a tough time defending her lead

In the women’s race there will be an interesting fight between the Norwegians and the Finns. Jacobsen has a 37 second lead on Finnish Kerttu Niskanen with Therese Johaug 8 seconds behind. Saarinen and Kylloenen start another 10 seconds behind. Weng at 1:10 is probably too far back to get all the way up to the lead.

The Finnish skiers have not got their strength in long free technique races, whereas this is one of Johaug’s strong points. The most probable scenario is that Johaug will close the gap to Niskanen whereas Saarinen and Kylloenen will struggle to get up to Johaug. Johaug will chase Jacobsen – with Niskanen trying to keep up. Depending on her day shape Jacobsen might be able to defend her lead – but it is just as probable that we will see Johaug and Jacobsen coming together to the finish – with or without a Finn or three.

Here is the complete startlist / tour standings.

Tour de Ski Lenzerheide: Preview & Predictions

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 30 Dec 2013@1:28

After two races in Oberhof the Tour de Ski moves on to Lenzerheide for a free technique sprint race on Tuesday and a 10/15 km classic mass start race on Wednesday. Both races will be very important for the long chasing start in Toblach/Cortina – especially in the men’s class it is important to get into the big groups which always form.

Whereas Marit Bjørgen and Alex Harvey are in the lead in the Tour de Ski, Johan leads the overall Tour de Ski XC-predictions after the two first races. There have been many surprises this year – especially in the Prologue – so Johan’s point score so far is only at 967 points. Still the lead to rem38 in second place is more than 50 points.

Set up your predictions

Set up your predictions here – or read the preview article below first:

Below the race previews you find tables with historical results.

Race previews – Stage 3, Free technique sprint

With another sprint race in free technique, it might be expected that the results will be similar to the results we saw at stage two in Oberhof. However, looking at the sprint course in Lenzerheide – this is a sprint course which will probably be more of an advantage for fast skiers who are good in downhill and flat parts. Instead of the tough hills up to the stadium in the end phase of the course as in Oberhof, the course features a tough uphill starting around halfway into the race – and then the last 5-600 meters are downhill and mostly flat (except for a small hill some 200 meters before the finish). Distance skiers like Martin Johnsrud Sundby and Therese Johaug who performed better than expected in Oberhof might get a rougher way to the semifinals and finals in Lenzerheide.

Also, the Lenzerheide sprint will be an opportunity for the skiers failing in Oberhof to show themselves from a better side – like for example Finn Haagen Krogh, Devon Kershav, Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen and Heidi Weng.

Favourites will again be Marit Bjørgen, Denise Herrmann, Ingvild Flugstad Østberg along with the Oberhof winner Hanna Erikson among the women. In the men’s class the Oberhof winner Calle Halfvarsson will try to defend his victory among Finn Haagen Krogh, Petter Northug, Federico Pellegrino, Andrew Newell and the “surprises” from Oberhof.

Race previews – Stage 4, Mass start classic

With the classic mass start race on stage 4 we will finally see a distance race in this year’s Tour de Ski – the skiers probably long as much for it as the spectators. Remember however that the mass start race in Tour de Ski is just as much about getting bonus seconds during the race as being the winner of the race. See historical results in classic mass start races at the bottom of this article.

Women

The classic mass start race have mostly been a fight between Marit Bjørgen and Justyna Kowalczyk the last years – with Therese Johaug giving a fight for second place. With Kowalczyk not on the start, this will probably be a fight between Bjørgen and Johaug – but look out for the very strong Finnish team which will give the Norwegians fight all the way to the finish.

Men

Alexey Poltoranin was in fantastic shape at the Tour de Ski last year – winning the classic 15 km mass start in Val di Fiemme at Tour de Ski – and also winning a classic 15 km mass start in La Clusaz two weeks later. Poltoranin showed good shape at the 15 km interval start race in Lillehammer in December, and should thus be among the top favourites. Also look out for Martin Johnsrud Sundby – showing top shape so far in the Tour de Ski – and although he has not shown top performances in the classic distance races so far this season, Sundby is definitely a man to look out for in Lenzerheide. The dark horse in this race is Petter Northug. Can he finally mobilize himself enough to take a podium place? Classic mass start races have not been his favourite lately – but Northug has surprised many times – will Lenzerheide be a step forward for the Norwegian?

The Canadian Harvey can be very strong at classic mass start races at the Tour – also look out for him in this classic mass start race. Outsiders are Daniel Rickardsson, Alexander Legkov, Devon Kershaw and Finn Haagen Krogh.

An outsider to note is the Kuusamo 10 km classic winner Lukas Bauer. Classic distance races is his specialty – but being a weak finisher the Lenzerheide finish might be a bit too easy for him to take the win if he can’t get away on the long uphill on the last loop?

Race Preview & Predictions: Tour de Ski 2013/2014

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 27 Dec 2013@19:30

Tour de Ski is the biggest highlight of the 2013/2014 season after the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. The Tour is a bit easier this year than the last years due to the Olympics – but it is still tough with the 7 stages in 3 different countries. The secret behind a victory is not to have a single bad day – no easy task!

The XC-Predictions were a big hit in the previous Tour de Ski editions – we expect a lot of competitors in the 2013/2014 edition as well. Remember that the overall Tour de Ski predictions are to be set up ahead of the first stage!

Race previews – Tour de Ski overall

Norway has dominated the World Cup this year – but is still chasing its first overall Tour de Ski victory – both in the women’s and men’s classes. Marit Bjørgen is more of a favourite than ever this year – can finally Norway get its first victory? Or will it be another one for the Polish Justyna Kowalczyk? In the men’s class it is more open than ever – with Dario Cologna not on the start a lot can happen this year.

Being in a Olympic Games year, the Tour de Ski is reduced to 7 stages. Two sprint races might be an advantage for the sprinters – but on the other hand the number of bonus points in the sprint are halved (30 bonus seconds for victory).

The predictions for the overall Tour de Ski are to be set up ahead of the Prologue – so it is time to take a look at the overall favourites:

Women

  • Marit Bjørgen: The biggest favourite due to Justyna Kowalczyk’s struggles in free technique this season – although she has had some problems up the Final Climb in earlier editions.
  • Justyna Kowalczyk: Has struggled with free technique this season – and with 5 of 7 races in free technique it might be tough for Kowalczyk to get her 5th Tour de Ski victory in a row. Kowalczyk is however very strong – both physically and mentally – so don’t write off the strong Polish skier!
  • Therese Johaug: Sprint is her weak point – the last uphill her strong point. Johaug has improved on the sprint – and if Johaug performs well and has luck on her side with respect to the grouping on the pursuit in Toblach, Johaug may very well be the winner at the top of Alpe Cermis!
  • Heidi Weng: The young Norwegian has been compared to Petter Northug. No big success so far this year – but she is strong in the Alpe Cermis. But can she deliver in 9 races in a row?
  • Kristin Lahteenmaki: 4th last year – and can very well fight for a place on the podium at the top of Alpe Cermis. The Finnish women are strongest in classic style – but still everything is possible in a tough tour with 7 competitions.
  • Outsiders: Kristin Størmer Steira (3rd last year), Denise Herrmann, Elizabeth Stephen and Astric Uhrenholdt Jacobsen are among the outsiders – it would be a surprise if any of these would climb all the way to the top, though!

Men

  • Alexander Legkov: Legkov is very strong in the distance races, but varies in the sprints. Impressive win last year – and has shown good shape also this year.  Legkov is one of the strongest skiers in the last uphill up Alpe Cermis, so if he is close before that race…
  • Petter Northug: Northug has not been as impressive this year as earlier seasons due to illness problems – but his shape is slowly approaching. Can he top his shape for the final stages?
  • Martin Johnsrud Sundby: World Cup leader – and good in all types of races except sprint. Will probably have a hard time coming to the sprint finals – thus loosing up to 60 bonus seconds. His abilities up Alpe Cermis are also not fully known – but definitely a dark horse who could make it all the way to the top!
  • Maurice Manificat: Showed strong shape by winning the 30 km in Davos – and is a strong climber. Not a strong sprinter – but is still one of the dark horses in this race.
  • Lukas Bauer: Bauer has two Tour de Ski victories – but has shown variable shape so far this year. Bauer’s way to victory goes through a good race on Stage 5 from Cortina to Toblach: Here Bauer can fight his way all the way up to the top and gain the time he has lost in the sprints if everything goes his way – and then even an overall Tour victory is possible with a good two last stages for him…
  • Outsiders: Finn Haagen Krogh, Sjur Røthe, Calle Halfvarsson, Alexey Poltoranin.  Maxim Vylegzhanin would be among the outsiders, but is not at the start list.
Prologue Preview

This prologue marks the start of the 8th edition of the Tour de Ski. The prologue is approximately the double length of a regular sprint – 3 km for the women and 4.5 km for the men. This year’s prologue is flatter than usual due to the course changes. In earlier editions of the Tour the seconds earned in the Prologue were “lost” on the pursuit the following day – this year the seconds will be a lot more important as there is no pursuit race grouping the skiers.

  • In the 2012/2013 prologue, Petter Northug did more than he planned to do – winning the prologue ahead of Marcus Hellner and Alexander Legkov. Dario Cologna finished 4th – with Ilia Chernousov and Alex Harvey on the next places.
  • In the 2011/2012 prologue, the big favourites showed their faces already from the start among the men. Petter Northug won ahead of Dario Cologna. The 2010/2011 winner Marcus Hellner finished 4th. Among the women, Justyna Kowalczyk won ahead of Marit Bjørgen with Hanna Brodin (Sweden) in third.
  • In the 2010/2011 prologue, Marcus Hellner won the men’s class ahead of a surprisingly strong sprint-specialist Alexey Petukhov (Russia) with Northug in third. Among the women Kowalczyk was again strongest – this time with Charlotte Kalla in second spot.
  • In the 2009/2010 prologue, Petter Northug won ahead of Marcus Hellner, Axel Teichmann, Dario Cologna and Sergey Shiriaev among the men. Petra Majdic won ahead of Natalia Korosteleva, Justyna Kowalczyk, Arianna Follis and Miriam Gössner among the women.
  • In the 2008/2009 prologue, Axel Teichmann won ahead of Dario Cologna, Petter Northug, Aivar Rehemaa and Devon Kershaw among the men. In the womens class Claudia Nystad won ahead of Arianna Follis, Petra Majdic, Justyna Kowalczyk and Marit Bjørgen.

Davos 30 km/15km: Highlight for interval start fans

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 13 Dec 2013@18:43

For fans of “old-school” cross country skiing, the Interval start races over 30km/15km free technique in Davos this weekend are one of the big highlights of the season. The last time we had this kind of “happening” was in Davos in December 2011 – with Petter Northug (Norway) and Marit Bjørgen (Norway) at the top of the results after the race – see WorldofXC’s detailed analysis of the men’s race here.

The race is skied on a 7.5 km track which is skied 4 times for the men and 2 times for the women – that is also a thing you don’t see to often in the World Cup today. The races in Davos are tricky because of the altitude of around 1500 meters – making the results a bit different from many other races. 30 km racing for the men with individual start at altitude will thus give interesting race developments and tactics with regards to opening speed. See the tables below for Davos results from the previous years (only one of the races was a 30 km / 15 km free technique race).

Most of the best free technique distance skiers are on the start in Davos, with Dario Cologna (Switzerland) and Marcus Hellner (Sweden) absent among others. But with this being the first individual start free technique race in the World Cup this season, the race in the mens’ class is quite open. Among the women the fight will probably be between the two Norwegians Marit Bjørgen and  Therese Johaug and Sweden’s Charlotte Kalla who has shown impressive shape lately. Note  that Kowalczyk has not shown the best results in free technique lately, and will get a hard time fighting for the victory.

Some thoughts and comments about the men’s race:

  • Johan Olsson (Sweden) is definitely among the big favourites – but is he in shape yet?
  • Martin Johnsrud Sundby has gone from classic specialist to free technique specialist – and now he tops the World Cup. How does he handle the 30 km interval start?
  • Alexander Legkov (Russia) did not impressive in Davos 2 years ago – but the Russian has shown many times that he is a complete skier who can do well in all disciplines. With a good race setup the Russian should be able to fight for the top positions.
  • Petter Northug (Northug) won this 30 km free technique race in interval start in 2011. His shape has slowly been building up according to the results the last weeks – is he there yet?
  • Maurice Manificat (France) was second in the 2011 race – will the French free technique specialist shine this year again?
  • Lukas Bauer (Czech Republic) is known mostly as a classic specialist – still he managed to take the 3rd place in Davos in 2011 and has shown good performances in long free technique races. Bauer showed excellent shape in Lillehammer – can he climb up on the podium in Davos?
  • Maxium Vylehzhanin (Russia) won the World Cup relay for Russia against Northug in Lillehammer last Sunday – is he up to it this weekend on a long free technique race?
  • Noah Hoffman (USA) had the fastest time on the free technique chasing start in Kuusamo – but the jump up to the podium in a 30 km free technique race over individual start is surely too long for the strong American?

Among the women, we have the usual favourites: The Norwegians, Kowalczyk and Kalla.

  • These longer free technique races are the best possibilities for Johaug to beat Bjørgen. Johaug has won the three last free technique races over 10 km or more – and thus Johaug is maybe the biggest favourite in Davos this year?
  • Marit Bjørgen has however had a very strong season opening – that means it should be quite open between the two Norwegians.
  • Charlotte Kalla surprised by beating the two Norwegians in Lillehammer on the 10 km classic race last Saturday – finishing only around 10 seconds behind Kowalczyk. Kalla could perfectly well take a World Cup victory again after a long break.
  • Kowalczyk is always among the favourites in the women’s class – but with her latest problems in free technique it should be difficult to take the victory. She is however very strong – and the altitude will probably work for her rather than against her. Of Kowalczyk’s 14 wins in distance (10km or longer) races in World Cup and Championships, 12 have been in classical style. The two wins in free style came in just over a week in February/March 2009, first 30km freestyle gold medal in WCH 2009, then winning the 10km in Lahti nine days later.

World Cup Opening: WhoWins the Ruka Triple?

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 28 Nov 2013@19:25

The start lists are out – let the fun begin! The Kuusamo Mini Tour (Ruka Triple) is the first of three tours in the World Cup this season – consisting of a classic sprint on Friday, an interval start classic race on Saturday (10 / 5 km) and a 15/10 km free technique chasing start on Sunday.

Note! The race predictions for the overall Ruka Triple must be in ahead of the sprint start!

Rule change! We will try to enforce a rule change in the coming season of WorldofXC WhoWins: If you forget to set up predictions for a race, the predictions for the previous race will stand. I.e. if you forget to set up predictions for the classic race on Saturday, Friday’s sprint predictions will count also on Saturday.

Race preview: Sprint

Men: Kriukov?

The men’s classic sprint race is one of the most open disciplines in the World Cup with four different winners the last season. Classic sprint victories were divided between Petter Northug Jr. (Stockholm and Drammen), Alexey Poltoranin (Davos), Nikita Kriukov (World Champs in Val di Fiemme and Kuusamo) and Teodor Peterson (Liberec). All four are on the start at the opening in Kuusamo.

Petter Northug has struggled with sickness this autumn – but still showed at Beitostølen last weekend that his shape is getting better race by race. Victory would be a surprise – but Northug has surprised many times before! The biggest favourite is probably the Russian Kriukov – who showed in Kuusamo last year that the course suits him.

In addition to these four skiers, there are at least 8-10 others who may climb onto the top on the podium on a perfect day. This includes Eirik Brandsdal, Pål Golberg, Alex Harvey, Andrew Newell, Øystein Pettersen, Ola Vigen Hattestad. Notably missing on the start list are Emil Jönsson and Dario Cologna.

Women: Randall?

The last year there have been three different winners for the women’s classic sprint – Justyna Kowalczyk (Drammen, Stockholm and Davos), Marit Bjørgen (World Champs in Val di Fiemme and Kuusamo) and Mona-Lisa Malvalehto (Liberec). The two big favourites thus again are Justyna Kowalczyk and Marit Bjørgen.

However, Kowalczyk has been a “slow starter” the last seasons – performing below her best in the first races. Marit Bjørgen on the other hand did not impress as much at the sprint race in the Norwegian season opener in Beitostølen as she usually does – here she finished only fourth behind Kikkan Randall, Vesna Fabjan and Katja Visnar.

Thus we have an open race also in the women’s class – perhaps one of the most open classic sprints of the last seasons.

Race Preview & Predictions: Holmenkollen 50km/30km

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 15 Mar 2013@1:06

The traditional Holmenkollen races over 50/30 km are rated very highly among the World Cup skiers. This year there are only two 50/30 km long distance races on the World Cup calendar – the World Championships raced in classic techbnique and this Holmenkollen weekend raced in free technique.

For the usual tables with historical results, see see the preview article for the World Championships 30/50 km – where both free technique and classic technique races were listed.

In addition to the traditional tables, it is interesting to look at the “odds seeds” (see below) from Statistical Skier which gives a list of favourites for this weekends races based on previous results. Note that this does not take into account the start list ; i.e. Johan Olsson will not be on the start list (sick) – and neither will Lukas Bauer (racing Birkebeineren). Dario Cologna has been sick, and was at the time of writing not sure if he would start. The big favourite is Petter Northug – the Norwegian has shown impressive shape lately. The Russians Legkov and Vylegzhanin will fight hard for the victory – and also look out for Tobias Angerer.

In the womens class, Martin Bjørgen has been sick, and was not sure if she would start when this was written. Justyna Kowalczyk is not that strong in free technique, and therefore is probably Therese Johaug the big favourite. Add Heidi Weng who has been very strong lately – and also Kristin Størmer Steira.

Race Preview: Lahti World Cup sprint

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 08 Mar 2013@18:59

The World Champions in sprint from Val di Fiemme – Marit Bjørgen (Norway) and Nikita Kriukov (Russia) – are both on the start line in the Lahti free technique sprint on Saturday. Both Bjørgen and Kriukov have stronger results in classic technique – but still count among the favourites in Lahti on Saturday.

Except for Norwegian Eirik Brandsdal and Swedish Ida Ingemarsdotter, all the main favourites are on the start line in the Lahti sprint.

Men: Sweden back on top?

Jönsson and Peterson had very disappointing results and finished 31st and 77th respectively

Ahead of the Sochi sprint in free technique, the Swedes Emil Jönsson and Teodor Peterson were named the big favourites. Partly due to wax trouble, Jönsson and Peterson had very disappointing results and finished 31st and 77th respectively – and are both very eager to be back on top again. Emil Jönsson has two victories in this discipline this season while Teodor Peterson has also won a free technique sprint race this season. The Swedes will be up against Sochi winner Petter Northug (Norway) – 2nd in the World Champs sprint in Val di Fiemme, Dario Cologna (2nd in the Sochi sprint), Alexey Petukhov (twice in the final in free technique sprints this season) and Anders Glørsen (twice Top 5 in free technique sprints this season). Also look out for Len Valjas (Canada), Ola Vigen Hattested (Norway) and David Hofer (Italy).

Women duel: Randall against Bjørgen

Can the best free technique sprinter this season – Kikkan Randall – beat the World Champion Marit Bjørgen

The most interesting fight in the womens class will be Kikkan Randall against Marit Bjørgen: Can the best free technique sprinter this season – Kikkan Randall – beat the World Champion Marit Bjørgen? Also look out for Maiken Caspersen Falla (winner in the free technique sprint in Canmore before Christmas), Jean Aurore (the French surprise this season – improving steadily and so far topping it with a second place in Sochi in free technique sprint at the start of February), Ingvild Flugstad Østberg (three times Top 5 in free technique sprint this season) and the Germans Denise Hermann and Hanna Kolb (both Top 5 this season).

Race Preview & XC-Predictions: 10/15 km Free Technique

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 19 Feb 2013@21:33

On Tuesday and Wednesday the scene is set for the only individual start race in this year’s World Championships in Val di Fiemme – a free technique race over 10 km for the women and 15 km for the men. Where mass start races require a good finish sprint and a lot of tactics – the interval start is closer to the origin of cross country skiing – the fight against the clock.

Men: Most open discipline

The winner in the Skiathlon on Saturday – Dario Cologna – is the reigning Olympic Champion – and always performs well in 15 km free technique races

The 15 km free technique is the most open discipline in this years World Championships. Johan Olsson won the last World Cup race in this exact discipline in Davos less than two weeks ago with most of the favourites on the start line – and thus has to be counted among the top favourites. On the other hand, the winner in the last test before the championships does not always manage to repeat the victory when it really counts. A few days before the last World Championships in Oslo in 2011, another Swede, Daniel Rickardsson, won the Drammen World Cup race in the same discipline, but took a disappointing 42nd place in the World Championships.

The winner in the Skiathlon on Saturday – Dario Cologna – is the reigning Olympic Champion – and always performs well in 15 km free technique races when he is in good shape. Cologna finished second in the last test in Davos – and is definitely one to look out for.   Third in Davos was Alexander Legkov – the Tour de Ski winner from earlier this year. Although 15 km individual start is not his best discipline, it would not be a big surprise if he takes the victory.

Martin Johnsrud Sundby won the season opener over 15 km free technique, but had a bad race in Davos with 28th place. However, Johnsrud Sundby showed that his shape is perfect on the Skiathlon on Saturday – finishing in 2nd spot.

Hellner versus Northug: Fight only for glory or for victory?

The two arch rivals Petter Northug (Norway) and Marcus Hellner (Sweden) are also among the favourites. Hellner won last season’s season opener over 15 km free technique – and can do exceptional races in this discipline. The 15 km individual start is not Northug’s strongest discipline – but if everything fits, Northug may very well take the top position on the podium. Northug may, however, decide to skip the 15 km in order to focus fully on the relay and the 50 km.

There has been one 10/15 km free technique race in the World Cup before Davos this season – the season opener in Gällivare in November. In the men’s class it was dominated by typical classic specialists like Martin Johnsrud Sundby and Alexey Poltoranin.

Outsiders are Alexey Poltoranin (2nd in the season opener in Gällivare on this discpiline, but best in classic technique), Matti Heikkinen (Top 5 both in Gällivare and in Davos), Sjur Røthe (if he is on the start list – showed good shape with 3rd place in the Skiathlon – good free technique skier),  Axel Teichmann, Maurice Manificat and Roland Clara.

Women: Bjørgen, Bjørgen, Bjørgen

Add also the German biathlon skier Miriam Gössner – she could be the big surprise of the day!

In the women’s class, the absense of Justyna Kowalczyk (saving her energy for the remaining races as free technique has not been her best technique this year) makes this even more a Norwegian Championships. The Norwegians had four women on top on the Skiathlon – and Marit Bjørgen, Therese Johaug and Kristin Størmer Steira will again be the top favourites.

The two last Norwegians on the start line – Heidi Weng (bronze on Skiathlon) and Astrid Uhrenholdt Jakobsen are also outsiders for the medals. The only non-Norwegian skiers among the top favourites in the women’s class are Charlotte Kalla (Sweden) and the Finnish women (although they are stronger in classic). Add also the German biathlon skier Miriam Gössner – she could be the big surprise of the day!

However, Marit Bjørgen is the big, big favourites. The strong Norwegian has won the three last 10 km free technique races she has started in in the World Cup.

Outsider in the women’s class are (if they are all starting) Kikkan Randall, Jessica Diggings,  Yulia Tchekaleva, Emma Wiken and Holly Brooks.

As a preview to the World Champs 10/15 km free technique, you find historical results from relevant races below. Note that the above preview was written before startlists were available.
