Race Preview: Tour de Ski Overall & Prologue – Set up Your Predictions

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 28 Dec 2012@8:00

Tour de Ski is the biggest highlight of the 2012/2013 season along with the World Championships – 7 tough stages in 3 countries will show who is the best overall cross country skier in the World Cup circus. The secret behind a victory is not to have a single bad day – just ask Petter Northug who lost the overall tour due to one or two bad stages in the previous editions of Tour de Ski!

The XC-Predictions were a big hit in the previous Tour de Ski editions – this year we  expect more than 200 setting up their predictions for Tour de Ski stages. Remember that the overall Tour de Ski predictions are to be set up ahead of the first stage!

Race previews – Tour de Ski overall

Norway has dominated the World Cup this year – but is still chasing its first overall Tour de Ski victory – both in the women’s and men’s classes. Marit Bjørgen was more a favourite than ever – but had to skip Tour de Ski due to health problems. However, Norway still have very good chances for a first overall victory with Petter Northug in the men’s class and Therese Johaug in the women’s class.

Being in a World Championships year, the Tour de Ski is reduced from 9 to 7 stages. Only one sprint race is included in the race series now – this is a significant advantage for non-sprinters like Therese Johaug and Lukas Bauer. Also, the Skiathlon is removed compared to last year’s edition. Is this what it takes to get a Norwegian overall Tour de Ski victory – after many attempts? Or will Cologna, Bauer, Kowalczyk or some of the dark horses take home the biggest title of the year within Cross Country skiing?

The predictions for the overall Tour de Ski are to be set up ahead of the Prologue – so it is time to take a look at the overall favourites:

Women

  • Justyna Kowalczyk: Always slow to get in shape at the start of the season – but won both the mass start and skiathlon races in Canmore – and showed impressive shape there even if some of the best skiers were not on the start line. Thus the shape is there for Tour de Ski this year again. and with Bjørgen not at the start line Kowalczyk is the big favourite.
  • Therese Johaug: Sprint is her weak point – the last uphill her strong point. Johaug has improved on the sprint – and in addition there is only one sprint in this edition of Tour de Ski. Can it be enough for an overall Tour de Ski victory? Last year Johaug had a bad day in the pursuit in Toblach – with no bad days in this edition of Tour de Ski Johaug may very well be the winner at the top of Alpe Cermis!
  • Kikkan Randall: Impressive season so far – improving a lot in distance races. The only woman to finish in the Top 10 in all World Cup races so far this year(!) – of those 7 times Top 6! Compare that to 4 times Top 6 for Kowalczyk or for Johaug. However, the last hill up Alpe Cermis will be tough for Randall – and removing a sprint race is not an advantage. It will be a surprise if Randall will take the overall victory – but a place in the Top 3 is within reach.
  • Heidi Weng: The young Norwegian has been compared to Petter Northug – and Therese Johaug has named her one of the favourites to win the overall Tour this year. Weng finished 3rd in the Kuusamo mini tour this year – and has shown that she can deliver good results in all disciplines. She is also strong in the Alpe Cermis. But can she deliver in 9 races in a row?
  • Anna Kyllönen: Kyllönen surprised with two 2nd places in the Canmore World Cup rounds (mass start and skiathlon), and has also showed that she can perform in sprint (4th place in Kuusamo classic sprint). Will be interesting to see if this Finnish skier can fight with Kowalczyk and Johaug in the overall Tour de Ski.
  • Charlotte Kalla: The Swedish hope – the Tour de Ski winner from 2008 – started the season with a 4th spot in Gällivare but had problems after that. Still an outsider in Tour de Ski if everything goes well!
  • Outsiders: Kristin Størmer Steira are outsiders – but a lot must happen in the top if one of these women will top the Tour de Ski results list this year…
  • Marit Bjørgen would have been the big favourite in the women’s class, but is not on the start list due to health problems. Vibeke Skofterud is also not on the start list.

Men

  • Petter Northug: Northug is again the biggest favourite in this edition of Tour de Ski after impressing performance earlier in the season. Northug has three 2nd places in a row and a 3rd place in the the last editions of Tour de Ski – and is very hungry for an overall victory. Northug won the Kuusamo mini tour earlier this year without any trouble at all – and will want to repeat this in Tour de Ski. In the  last editions of Tour de Ski Northug has not managed to deliver stable performances all stages –  the Cortina-Toblach stage, classic races and some of the sprint races have been troublesome for the Norwegian in the last editions.
  • Dario Cologna: Cologna is the second big favourite in this Tour edition although his season opening has not been the best with a 4th place in the Kuusamo mini-tour as his best. However, Cologna has earlier shown that he is a complete skier who can win in all disciplines – and he has the ability to perform consistently well in many races in a row.  Three Tour de Ski victories says it all! Also, Cologna has an edge over Northug up the last stage in Alpe Cermis.
  • Alexander Legkov: Legkov is very strong in the distance races, but varies in the sprints. But with only one sprint on the program this year, Legkov is a strong contender for Cologna and Northug.  As for Northug, Legkov has had trouble with stability on multi-day events. However, Legkov is one of the strongest skiers in the last uphill up Alpe Cermis, so if he is close before that race…
  • Marcus Hellner: The Swedish hope finished 2nd last year after a very good last stage. Hellner has previously shown that he can perform well in all disciplines – from sprint to the long Cortina-Toblach stage – but the Swede has not impressed in the season opening which gave a 12th place in the Kuusamo mini-tour and a 3rd place in Gällivare. Still one of the big outsiders!
  • Maxim Vylegzhanin: The dark horse who can actually take the overall victory if everything goes his way. Has not showed stabil results over many races previously – that might be his problem this year as well. However, the Russian impressed with a second spot in the Kuusamo mini tour.
  • Lukas Bauer: Bauer has two Tour de Ski victories, but in addition to not showing optimal shape so far this year, he has two problems: His weakness in sprint and in man-to-man fights. Bauer’s way to victory goes through a good race on Stage 6 from Cortina to Toblach: Here Bauer can fight his way all the way up to the top and gain the time he has lost in the sprint if everything goes his way – and then even an overall Tour victory is possible…
  • Outsiders: Roland Clara – strong in Alpe Cermis and showed that the shape is approaching with 2nd spot in the Canmore skiathlon. The Canadians Harvey and Kershav are also among the outsiders althoug they have not performed well so far this year – can do well in both sprint and distance races.
Prologue Preview

This prologue marks the start of the 7th edition of the Tour de Ski – 7 competitions in 9 days in two countries. The prologue is approximately the double length of a regular sprint – 3 km for the women and 4 km for the men (increased by 250 meters from last year).

  • The women start from 13:15 CET – the men start from 14:30 CET
  • In the 2011/2012 prologue, the big favourites showed their faces already from the start among the men. Petter Northug won ahead of Dario Cologna. The 2010/2011 winner Marcus Hellner finished 4th. Among the women, Justyna Kowalczyk won ahead of Marit Bjørgen with Hanna Brodin (Sweden) in third.
  • In the 2010/2011 prologue, Marcus Hellner won the men’s class ahead of a surprisingly strong sprint-specialist Alexey Petukhov (Russia) with Northug in third. Among the women Kowalczyk was again strongest – this time with Charlotte Kalla in second spot.
  • In the 2009/2010 prologue, Petter Northug won ahead of Marcus Hellner, Axel Teichmann, Dario Cologna and Sergey Shiriaev among the men. Petra Majdic won ahead of Natalia Korosteleva, Justyna Kowalczyk, Arianna Follis and Miriam Gössner among the women.
  • In the 2008/2009 prologue, Axel Teichmann won ahead of Dario Cologna, Petter Northug, Aivar Rehemaa and Devon Kershaw among the men. In the womens class Claudia Nystad won ahead of Arianna Follis, Petra Majdic, Justyna Kowalczyk and Marit Bjørgen.

XC-Predictions: Quebec Sprint Free on Saturday evening!

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 07 Dec 2012@8:00

The Quebec weekend of team sprint and sprint free replaces the traditional Düsseldorf weekend which had its 10th anniversary last season. The sprint is set to go on Saturday evening CET – with the qualification starting at 19:15 CET.

The course has some similarities to the Düsseldorf course though – flat but with even more curves. In addition the organizers included a “ski jump” – so there should be enough excitement for both skiers and spectators.

Big names not appearing

There are some big names taking off both the Canadian weekends as they are preparing for Tour de Ski. This includes Marit Bjørgen, Justyna Kowalczyk, Charlotte Kalla, Petter Northug, Dario Cologna and many other of the top distance skiers. Startlists for the sprint were not out when this preview was written, but startlists for the team relay were ready and there was also a list of participants for the sprint.

Men: Morilov or Peterson?

This is the first sprint free of the season, and thus the skiers have not had the possibility to show their shape on the international level yet. Based on last years results, Devon Kershaw (finished 1st and 3rd in the two last free sprints in the World Cup – is now on home ground) will be a very interesting man to follow. In addition look out for Eirik Brandsdal (winner of Milano last year), Ola Vigen Hattestad (not the best season start, but finished the previous season well), Teodor Peterson (four finals – one victory in sprint free last year), Morilov (the Russian was very strong all of the season last year – in the final in nearly all sprint free races) and Petukuv (four sprint free finals – one victory). Peterson, Brandsdal Morilov is my guess!

Women: Time for Randall?

In the womens class the lack of Bjørgen and Kowalczyk makes it more open. Maiken Caspersen Falla had four times top 3 last year – and will be fighting hard against Ida Ingemarsdotter (claiming to not be in top shape on her blog, but we will see about that) and Kikkan Randall (wanting to perform well on North American soil). Chandra Crawford is the home favourite – if she can repeat the season opening of last year on home ground (4th in Düsseldorf free sprint, 2nd in Roggla free sprint), the spectator will go crazy! It will also be interesting to see the big surprise of last years pre-christmas season – the Swiss Laurien van der Graaff!

Note! The usual tables with previous results are below the course preview!

Course Preview

It is a long course – 1720 meters long according to the race program. Here you can see a race preview video and Christoph Eigenmann has posted some pictures of the course on his blog:

Animated course – FIS Cross-country World Cup from Sprint Québec on Vimeo.

There is no snow in the surrounding area, but the organizing committee could produce almost 10.000 m3 of snow in the past weeks thanks to cold temperatures. Here is a video posted by Emil Jönnson going through the course with a camera yesterday:

XC-Predictions: Kuusamo coming up Friday!

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 29 Nov 2012@8:00

The Kuusamo Mini Tour (Ruuka Triple) is the first of three tours in the World Cup this season – consisting of a classic sprint on Friday, an interval start skating race on Saturday (10 / 5 km) and a 15/10 km chasing start on Sunday.

Some skiers (for example Gällivare winner Martin Johnsrud Sundby) are considering not to start due to the cold weather. In addition several Swedish and Norwegian skiers are sick and will not come to the start either. Charlotte Kalla, Ida Ingemarsdotter, Maiken Falla and Johan Olsson are some of the skiers who are not starting.

Note that the following preview is written before start lists were available. Start lists will be published Thursday evening – typically around 18:00 CET.

Note! The race predictions for the overall MiniTour must be in ahead of the sprint start!

Race preview: Women

Marit Bjørgen is the big favourite in the womens class – as always. With victory in both the 2010 and 2011 editions and a victory in Gällivare last weekend, Kalla not starting and Kowalczyk not in top shape, it is difficult to see somebody else taking the victory. The main contender is Therese Johaug – if she manages to get some bonus seconds from the sprint, she could give Johaug a fight for the overall victory.

In addition to the two Norwegian and Kowalczyk (who finished down on 5th place last year), Kikkan Randall is the big name in the womens class after Gällivare. Also count in the rest of the Norwegians for the fight for the podium.

Race preview: Men

The mens class is a lot more open – as always. Petter Northug is a favourite after his victory last year – in the final chasing start he has the advantage of knowing that he can beat anybody in the last 100 meters. Dario Cologna disappointed last weekend – but the skis and snow has to take some of the blame for the result in Gällivare, so the Swiss will surely be in for the fight. Also count in the Russians – Legkov took the Kuusamo mini tour in 2010.

Eldar Rønning finished 3rd last year, and could be in for the fight for the medals this year as well. Marcus Hellner and the other Swedes should also be counted among the favourites.

Sprint – Race preview

The Kuusamo Mini Tour (Ruuka Triple) opens with a classic sprint as has been the tradition for some years. The weather forecast for the weekend is winterly cold – with some runners (for example Gällivare winner Martin Johnsrud Sundby) considering not to start due to the cold weather.

Several Swedish and Norwegian skiers are sick and will not come to the start either. Charlotte Kalla, Ida Ingemarsdotter, Maiken Falla and Johan Olsson are some of the skiers who are not starting.

Women Sprint – Race preview

The races this weekend get started on Friday with a classic sprint (qualification from 10:30 CET – finals from 12:30 CET). With victories in the three last classic sprints in the World Cup last season – and the both the 2010 and 2011 edition of the Kuusamo classic sprint in November, Marit Bjørgen (Norway) is the overwhelming favourite. The action will as usually in Kuusamo be on the uphill coming back into the stadium. With the first sprint of the season, we’ll get to see some skiers which we have not seen yet this season.

Behind Bjørgen it is quite open in the classic sprint scene. Justyna Kowalczyk (Poland) is not yet in shape – and has not managed to deliver results in the Kuusamo sprint the last two seasons. Kalla and Falla are not on the start list due to illness. Julia Ivanova finished the last season very well with two 2nd places in the World Cup on classic sprints, but did not perform well in the national classic sprint race in Muono two weeks ago. Kikkan Randall has not been on the very top in the latest classic sprints, but with the shape she has shown lately she could very well finish top 3 – and even fight with Bjørgen for the win. Astrid Jacobsen has shown good shape but no good results yet – she is definitely one to expect in a final.

Men Sprint – Race preview

Most of the big names will be in the field in the mens class – with a tight fight for the win expected. As always in the Tours, this will be a fight between the all-rounders and the sprinters. The sprinters will surely be hungry for success as this is their first chance to show form this season! In the 8 classic sprints selected as relevant for this race, we have 7 different winners! This is a very open race indeed!

Eirik Brandsdal (Norway) finished the previous season in an excellent way – winning the two last classic sprints in Drammen and Stockholm. Emil Jönsson took the Lahti classic sprint a few days earlier, while Cologna and Kruikov were successful in Otepää and Oberstdorf earlier in 2012. The Kuusamo classic sprint of 2011 saw a Swedish winner – Teodor Peterson – while two Norwegians won the 2010 and 2009 editions – Dahl and Hattestad respectively.

In addition to the winners listed above, count in Northug, Hellner, Petukhov, Morilov and Pettersen among the favourites.

10/5 km Free Preview

10 km Free individual start for men and 5 km Free individual start for women have only been part of the World Cup circuit once in the last years – and that is in last years edition of the Kuusamo Tour.

The shorter distance makes the race a bit more similar to a prologue – especially for the women which race only 5 kilometers. However, expect the same runners to have capacity on the 10/5 km as on the 15/10 km Free in Gällivare last weekend.

In the womens class we have the usual favourites. The 5 km might be Johaugs first big chance to beat Marit Bjørgen this season, though. Also look out for Kikkan Randall who got take a popular World Cup victory if everything plays her way.

In the mens class Martin Johnsrud Sundby could repeat last weekend victory on 15 km free – if he takes the chance on starting in cold Finland. Number two and three from last weekend – Hellner and Poltoranin should also be counted in – as well as Northug and Cologna. One man to keep an extra eye on is Matti Heikkinen who showed excellent shape with a 4th place last weekend in Gällivare – now he is on home ground and wants to show results in front of the home crowd.

Gällivare: Many surprises – tricky predictions!

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 24 Nov 2012@14:16

Many surprises in today’s XC-Predictions for the 15/10 km free technique in Gällivare! On top today was Pre-Ole with 576 points ahead of Herminator.

The biggest negative surprises were in the men’s class. Dario Cologna was tipped on top – but finished 19th. Northug was also tipped up there – but finished 7th. Even worse: Johan Olsson who finished 31st. The winner Martin Johnsrud Sundby was tipped down in 16th place!

In the women’s class it was more like expected. The only surprise was Justyna Kowalczyk’s 27th place – on the other hand Kowalczyk has often had a slow start as discussed in the race preview.

Gällivare 15/10km Race Development: Graphical Analysis

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 24 Nov 2012@14:07

Martin Johnsrud Sundby – previously considered a classic specialist – did a fantastic race on today’s 15 km free in Gällivare. Sundby was fastest on 5 of the splits – especially in the second part of the race the Norwegian skier dominated as you can see from the graphical race analysis above.

In the split illustrations, a flat curve for a split indicated the best split time on this split. When the curves go down for a skier on a split, this means that the skier looses time on this split. The vertical lines correspond to different split times from the timing system. The splits in the above illustration are at 1.9 km, 2.3 km, 5 km, 6.9 km, 7.3 km, 10 km and 12.3 km.

The only one being more impressive in the last part of the men’s race than Sundby was Alexey Poltoranin who had a very strong finish from 12.3 km to 15 km.

Below graphical splits analysis is shown for some selected skiers – corresponding curves are also shown for the women.

Interactive graphical splits analysis can be found here:

XC-Predictions: Ready for new season!

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 22 Nov 2012@23:10

The World Cup season 2012/2013 starts in Gällivare in Sweden on Saturday November 24th with 10 km Free for women and 15 km Free for the men. The World Cup opening is always special for the skiers – as they are unsure about how their shape is compared to their competitors.

The course in Gällivare is a technical course with a lot of curves and short up- and downhills (see course map at the bottom of this preview).

First for Johaug on 10 km free?

The big three on a 10 km Free the last seasons have been Marit Bjørgen (Norway), Justyna Kowalczyk (Poland) and Charlotte Kalla (Sweden). Bjørgen won the last two international season openings ahead of Kalla, while Kowalczyk on the other hand is usually not in top shape in the first races. The Polish superstar often uses the first races of the season to get in shape ahead of Tour de Ski, and finished only 10th and 7th in the World Cup openings in Sjusjøen and Gällivare the two last seasons.

However, for the first time in a long, long time, the main favourite in a World Cup race for women is not one of the big three. Instead Therese Johaug (Norway) is the big name. In the national season opener in Beitostølen last weekend Therese Johaug showed that she is capable of climbing all the way to the top after beating Marit Bjørgen twice. Even if 10 km Free has not been Johaug’s favourite discipline in the World Cup (7th and 9th from the last two international season openers), she is now counted as the big favourite.

In the 10 km free season opener in Bruksvallarna Kalla took the victory ahead of new Swedish surprise Emma Wiken and Ida Ingemarsdotter. The corresponding race in Muoni (Finland) saw Kowalczyk on top ahead of Elizabeth Stephen and Yulia Tchekaleva – Riita-Liisa Roponen was best Finn in fourth. In Beitostølen Johaug won with nearly a minute ahead of Bjørgen and Heidi Weng.

Open among the men

In the mens class it is more open, but Petter Northug, Marcus Hellner and Dario Cologna are surely three of the biggest favourites along with Johan Olsson and Maurice Manificat. Johan Olsson – the winner in the World Cup opening in Sjusjøen last year – showed great shape by winning the Swedish season opening in Bruksvallerna. Northug was second in Sjusjøen last year – and looked very confident in the Norwegian season opener in Beitostølen last weekend. The Russians will be strong again – and also look out for Daniel Richardsson and Dario Cologna.

In the 15 km free season opener in Bruksvallarna last weekend Johan Olsson took the victory ahead of Daniel Richardsson and Ivan Babikov. Matti Heikkinen took the Muoni 15 km free opener ahead of Lukas Bauer and Jens Filbrich. Beitostølen saw Petter Northug on top with Maurice Manificat in second and Finn Haagen Krogh in third. There was also an international FIS race in Gällivare with a small, strong startfield which Dario Cologna won ahead of Alexander Legkov and Curdin Perl.

Waiting for surprises: Rybinsk coming up!

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 03 Feb 2012@16:27

With many of the top names missing – especially in the men’s class – we have very open races in Rybinsk this weekend. With the current temperatures, it might even be open if there are any races at all…

Add to that that there are very few 15 km/10km Free Mass start races in the World Cup.

In the tables below relevant results from earlier races are shown. It is evident that of the men who have placed Top 10 in 15 km Free Mass start the last seasons, only a small percentage of them are on the start list in the 15 km here in Rybinsk.

As always in Rybinsk (see a table for Rybinsk results further down), expect some Russians to be in the top – both the high profile ones like Legkov, Vylegzhanin and Sedov – but also less well-known skiers on the local quota. In addition to the Russians, Maurice Manificat (FRA) and Roland Clara (ITA) should be counted among the top favourites.

In the women’s class, the situation is quite different. Most of the top names are on the startlist, and we expect again a fight between Marit Bjørgen (NOR) and Justyna Kowalczyk (POL) where Bjørgen will try to take back the overall World Cup lead. It will not be an easy job though, as the Polish skier has shown impressive shape lately while Bjørgen was ill during the Norwegian Championships last weekend.

Other favourites in the women’s class are Charlotte Kalla (SWE) and the other Norwegian skiers Skofterud, Johaug and Kristoffersen. Also count in Russian Khazova with the home ground advantage.

Relevant results

Since there are very few 15 km / 10 km Free Mass start races in the World Cup, the number of races included in the tables this time are increased. This time all 10/15 km Free races and all Mass start free races except for the 30 km/50 km ones are included.

Ready for Moscow – pick your winners!

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 01 Feb 2012@19:36

The Cross-Country World Cup circus is about to make a stop in the Russian capital Moscow on 2nd February. It is not the first time that the elite skiers get together for the World Cup in Moscow, however, as already in 1990 and 2000 the Russian metropolis was on the schedule. But it is the first time that the Sprint World Cup is held around the famous Luzhniki Olympic Stadium, the biggest sports stadium in Russia.

On a 1,5 km long, flat course, about 140 athletes including both sprint World Cup leaders Kikkan Randall (USA) and Alexey Petuhkov (RUS), will race for the top spots. (Text from FIScrosscountry.com)

Looking at the start field, we have most strong sprinters on the start line. Notably missing is Marit Bjørgen in the women’s class – thus Justyna Kowalczyk will get a chance to get an advantage in the overall World Cup with a good race in Moscow. Also Dario Cologna, Petter Northug and Marcus Hellner have chosen not to race the Moscow sprint.

Men
Among the men, the Russians are big favourites on home ground after excellent performance so far this season, e.g. victory in Toblach and second spot in Rogla free sprints for Nikolay Morilov. Also look out for Swedish Teodor Peterson, the Norwegians with Eirik Brandsdal and Ola Vigen Hattestad as the top favourites.

Women
Among the women, Kikkan Randall has been the dominator on free sprint this season – except for the Rogla sprint where Randall crashed the American has been top 2 in all free sprints this season. Count in Chandra Crawford, Ida Ingemarsdotter and Maiken Caspersen Falla among the top favourites – along with Natalia Matveeva on homeground. It will also be interesting to see if Swiss Van der Graaff can be up there again after a very strong start of the season.

XC-Predictions: Ready for exciting Otepää weekend

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 20 Jan 2012@18:47

In Otepää we are ready for the 3rd classic sprint this season on Saturday – after the Kuusamo sprint in November and the Oberstdorf sprint in the end of December. In addition there is a discipline which is not skied too often – the classic interval start 10/15 km on Sunday- with the tough and difficult courses in Otepää this race is  something for the strongest skiers!

Most favorites are racing  - notably absent are Emil Jönsson (SWE) and Petter Northug (NOR) among the men and the 2010-winner Hanna Falk among the women who is not yet up to it along with French Jean Aurore who surprised with a 6th place in Oberstdorf.

Men’s sprint

In the men’s class, the Russians Nikita Kriukov, Alexey Pethukhov and Nikolay Morilov are definitely among the biggest favourites after their triple in the Oberstdorf classic sprint. Kriukov has been the most stable skier in classic sprint the last seasons, regularly making top 5 races when at the start line. Also look out for Sweden’s Teodor Peterson who showed his classic capabilities by winning in Kuusamo in the end of November – and again impressed in last week’s Milano skating sprint with a third place.

Norwegian Eirik Brandsdal and Ola Vigen Hattested won double in the Otepää classic sprint last year – they should both be counted among the top favourites this year around as well. While Hattestad has struggled finding his shape lately, Brandsdal won the Milano sprint in an impressive way last weekend.

Women’s sprint

In the women’s class we have the usual fight between Marit Bjørgen and Justyna Kowalczyk. Both have been resting since Tour de Ski, so it will be interesting to see how well they have regenerated. The classic sprint is usually not the best discipline for Kowalczyk – on the other hand Kowalczyk took the last classic sprint in Oberstdorf.

Charlotte Kalla took the second spot in the classic sprint opening in Kuusamo in November – and will want to mix in in the fight for victory. The same for a triplet of Norwegian skiers; Maiken Caspersen Falla who finished third in Otepää last year, Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen who finished 3rd in the Oberstdorf sprint in the end of December, and Vibeke Skofterud – 3rd in Kuusamo – who is back after the sickness which made her unable to start in Tour de Ski.

Men’s 15 km Sunday

This is a race which is tailored for Lukas Bauer: The Czech skier took 3 x Otepää 15 km in a row between 2008 and 2010 (see statistics below) – and then could not start in 2011 due to illness. This year the Czech skier is back – and Bauer really wants to show that he can perform after not being happy with his  Tour de Ski results. Two other skiers who have this type of race as their specialty are Daniel Rickardsson (SWE) and Eldar Rønning (NOR). Rønning has been sick the last week, but is reported to be strong. Start lists are not yet ready when this is written, but Matti Heikkinen (FIN), Martin Johnsrud Sundby (NOR) are also typically strong in these kind of races.

Women’s 10 km Sunday

Marit Bjørgen is the big favourite over 10 km classic. The Norwegian has won the last three World Cup races over 10 km Classic ahead of Kowalczyk. On the other hand, Otepää is one of Kowalczyk’s favourite courses – she took the win here on the 10 km classic in 2009 and 2010. Also look out for Saarinen (FIN), Johaug (NOR), Skofterud (NOR) and Lähteenmäki (FIN) if they are on the start list.

XC-Predictions: Milano Sprint

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 13 Jan 2012@20:14

For the first time since 1998 the Cross Country Skiing World Cup is back in Milano. The course this weekend is a completely flat course – 620 meters long – but still with some technical elements due to many curves. The competitions will take place in the Sempione Park (Parco Sempione) close by the city center for the first time. The Park with its 380,000 square meters is the largest green space in the historic center of the city.

Most of the all-round skiers who competed in Tour de Ski skip the Milano sprint – like Dario Cologna, Petter Northug, Justyna Kowalczyk and Marit Bjørgen. The pure sprint specialists are all at the start in the sprint races in Milano – but notably the Swedish Sprint specialists Emil Jönsson skips the races. “Emil got cold after the Tour and therefore had to stay at home,” Sweden’s sprint coach Arild Monsen explains in a press relase from the Swedish Ski Team.

Men’s favourites

Of the Men on the start list, Morilov (RUS), Petukhov (RUS) and Hattestad (NOR) each have one victory in skating sprint races this season (see table below for results in the last skating sprints for all starters in the Milano sprint). The biggest favourites in the Milano sprint are again the Russian skiers – but Hattestad who won in a similar flat course in Düsseldorf in early December is very eager to be back on top after his disappointing classic sprint during Tour de Ski where he missed the finals.

Swedish Peterson started the season very well with 5th and 2nd places in Düsseldorf and Davos – the Swede will want to show that he is still to be counted in the top. Also count in the other Norwegian skiers among the favourites – Gløersen, Golberg and Brandsdal finished 3rd, 4th and 6th in Rogla. Also count in home favourite Pellegrino (ITA) who got to the finals in Düsseldorf but has not come past the semifinals since then – and Hofer (ITA) who finished 4th in Toblach.

Women’s favourites

Kikkan Randall has been the dominating skier in the women’s sprint this season – winning the two first races in Düsseldorf and Davos. Finishing Tour de Ski up Alpe Cermis last weekend cost her a lot of power though, so it will be exciting to see if the American skier has managed to get enough rest the last week.

Norwegian sprint specialist Maike Caspersen Falla got her first World Cup victory in Rogla before Christmas, and will try to repeat the victory in Milano. Also look out for Crawford (CAN) and Matveeva (RUS).

Another interesting start is Swiss Van der Graaff who has the impressive series 3 – 5 – 8 in the first three sprint races this season – after finishing around number 40 last season. See the table below for other outsiders based on the latest sprint free technique races in the World Cup.
