Tour de Ski race predictions: Stage 7

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 08 Jan 2011@16:19

In the overall results, it is now getting really close with only one stage to go! Qstoffe has taken over the lead – and has a lead of 17 points ahead of Mats L with Gigi in third another 75 points behind. Several lost a lot of points due to Bauer and Kalla not having good days today.

The winner of today’s predictions was Jan with 951 points (that is me, actually – winning for the second time in a row – quite embarrassing)

Splits – women’s race

Tour de Ski: Race prediction results stage 6

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 06 Jan 2011@14:56

The winner of today’s predictions was Jan with 1086 points (that is me, actually – hitting the jackpot with all 5 women correct and a good score among the men as well) – and as expected we had a new record number of points in the WhoWins XC Predictions. Several lost a lot of points due Legkov withdrawing – as they did not change their predictions ahead of the start.

In the overall results, Mats L has now taken over the lead with 4188 points – 48 points ahead of qstoffe with Gigi in third.

Tour de Ski Toblach Pursuit Women: Splits analysis

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 06 Jan 2011@14:48

Kowalczyk lost a lot of time in today’s pursuit race over 15 kilometers skating in Toblach. With the shorter race, it was not expected that this much should happen in the overall in the womens race, but it seems Kowalczyk is starting to get tired. The above illustration shows how the group consisting of Folla, Longa and Kalla gain time on Kowalczyk all the way. Also, Haag and Lahteemäki gain time for the last 5 km, even if they were skiing alone.

Looking at the complete field, there was a lot less grouping than among the men (see below). In addition to the Follis/Longa/Kalla group (with Majdic being in the group for parts of the race), there was a group with Johaug, Prochazkova, Kristoffersen, Roponen and a big group with Saarinen, Norgren and Randall among others.

Update: Based on an entry on her blog, Kowalczyk lost time due to bain in her lower legs today – a problem which she has had for some time when skating. Thus she should not have problems with this in the classic race on Saturday.

Tour de Ski Queen Stage: Splits analysis (Updated)

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 06 Jan 2011@13:00

The above illustration shows the development in the Tour de Ski Queen Stage from Cortina to Toblach – highlighting how a big chasing pack formed from most of the skiers between position 2 and 15.

The pack gained time on Cologna throughout most of the race – gaining nearly 45 seconds from 7 km up to 27 km. However, the group had problems cooperating in the last part of the downhill down to Toblach, loosing more than half of what they had worked hard on gaining in the first part of the race.

For the illustration above, comparison is done to Dario Cologna. A line which is flat means the same time as Cologna. A line which goes down represents slower speed – a line which goes up represents faster speed.

It is also very interesting to take a look at the complete field – seeing how nearly no single skiers survived own their own throughout the race – all the skiers getting sucked up by different groups. Of the Top 30, only two skiers survived on their own – Dario Cologna and Marcus Hellner. The rest of the skiers packed themselves into only three big groups.

Do your own analysis

You may also open the splitsbrowser yourself to make your own analysis of the race. A flat line on a split means that an athlete is the fastest on a split. The steeper the line goes, the more an athlete looses on that split. Note that all lines start at 0:00 instead of at the actual start time, thus the illustration is not useful for the first split.

Live update during the race

The splits analysis was regularly updated during the stage to make it possible to understand the action as it happens by looking at the splitsbrowser.

Tour de Ski Stage 5 prediction results

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 05 Jan 2011@18:28

The winner of today’s predictions was pett with 811 points – after having correctly predicted the top men Kershaw and Cologna, while loosing some points in the womens class. Several lost a lot of points due to Emil Jönsson and Petukhov not starting – giving 0 points to all having them on their Top 5 list. One of these was Geraldo13, who lost his overall lead in the Tour de Ski predictions to Gigi today.

About one third of the predictors had Devon Kershaw on their Top 5 lists – but only 3 believed in the Canadian as a winner. Those three got rewarded well – two of them taking the top spots in today’s predictions. Petter Northug and Marcus Hellner also performed better than expected.

Among the women, Arianna Follis was the people’s favourite – but was in the end beaten by a few millimeters by Petra Majdic. Kowalczyk and Kalla were the big disappointments among the women – finishing 22nd and 13th while being on 3rd and 4th among the tips.

Race preview Cortina to Toblach

The mens 35 km pursuit from Cortina to Toblach will be a special race. How much faster can the big pack race compared to the single racers at the front of the field? The question is if the pack will cooperate ; chances are that Northug will wait for the others, and then lie behind. Do the others want to help Northug up towards Cologna?

Cologna says: – I think the next 3 competitions will be challenging. I have no other choice than go in my own speed tomorrow. I will see how big the gap is after a few kilometres and then see what happens during the race

In the race from Cortina to Toblach in last years edition of Tour de Ski, a pack of 4 skiers developed after less than one third of the race – then growing to 6 skiers, with Northug, Cologna and Hellner getting away again in the end. At the start in Cortina, there were 20 skiers within 2 minutes – in the finish there were 18 skiers within 1 minute. Lukas Bauer was actually 2 minutes down in 18th place ahead of the Cortina-Toblach stage last year.

Cologna leads the overall mens Tour standing by 42 seconds ahead of Devin Kershaw. In third position is Marcus Hellner, who got fourth on the sprint (+1.14). Petter Northug is 4th (+1.45). Alexander Legkov 5th (+1.55), Alex Harvey 6th (+2.02), Martin Jaks 7th (+2:10), Simen Østensen 8th (+2.14). Lukas Bauer is all the way down in 10th at +2.52.

The women have only 15 km, and there is less chances that there will be big changes in the top. Also, Kowalczyk is strong enough to ski away from the others alone in the lead, as she showed in the pursuit in Oberhof.

Kowalczyk leads the overall womens Tour de Ski standing by 39 seconds down to Petra Majdic, 1.08 down to Kalla, 1:09 down to Follis, 1:13 to Longa, 1.38 to Lahteenmaki, 1:44 to Haag and 1.59 to Jacobsen.

Tour de Ski Sprint statistics: Toblach

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 05 Jan 2011@18:18

There were very quite big differences in accumulated heat times in the womens class in today’s sprint in Toblach – a sign that the women are getting tired after 5 days of racing? The winner of the sprint – Petra Majdic (Slovenia) – is however only getting stronger. Again she had the fastest sum of heat times – 3 seconds faster than Magda Genuin (Italy).

Among the men it was however tighter than usual – with accumulated heat times withing within 3 seconds for all 6 finalists – the closest it has been in the sprint races this season.

Splits analysis: Tour de Ski stage 4

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 03 Jan 2011@16:33

Some interesting details to be seen in the splits analysis from the mens pursuit race today ; Heikkinen was way back in the field for all of the race – coming to the front only for the final sprint. This looks kind of like the usual Petter Northug tactics – only Northug had to be up there fighting for the bonus seconds today and could not hold on to his normal tactics.

In the illustration above, a flat curve means that an athlete is fastest on a split. Observe how Heikkinen is way faster than the rest of the field on the second last split – whereas Northug looses a lot of time.

Tour de Ski Stage 4: Prediction results and overall results

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 03 Jan 2011@16:29

A day of surprise winners in Tour de Ski today ; nobody had put up the mens winner Heikkinen better than 4th spot – and nobody had set up the womens winner Haag better than 2nd spot. The winner of today’s predictions was statisticalskier who predicted Marcus Hellner and Justyna Kowalczyk on top. Geraldo13 was 9th on the 4th stage – and still keeps the overall lead after the 4 first Tour de Ski stages.

Of the men, only Bauer and Heikkinen performed as well or better than expected of the 10 most tipped athletes (see graphic below) – showing that this was really a difficult race to predict. Of the women, Kowalczyk, Saarinen, Majdic and Roponen disappointed, whereas Haag and Kalla were the two big positive surprises.

Tour de Ski Sprint Statistics Oberstdorf

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 02 Jan 2011@16:54

Dario Cologna showed excellent shape in the classic sprint in Oberstdorf today and had the best sum of heat times of all athletes among the men. However, the Swiss overall Tour de Ski leader was not fast enough in the final sprint – Swedish Jönsson taking the sprint victory ahead of Canadian Kershaw. Legkov spent least power today – using a total of 14 seconds less than Cologna for the four heats.

In the womens class, the winner Majdic (Slovenia) also had the fastest sum of heat times – ahead of number two Kowalczyk and number three Jacobsen.

Below you find all heat times.

Race prediction results

Mats L hit best with the predictions for todays 3rd stage of the Tour de Ski in Obersdorf, Germany. Mats L hit the jackpot with all top three women correct – Majdic ahead of Kowalczyk and Jacobsen – and also correctly predicted Jönnson as the winner among the men. Geraldo13 was second on the third stage – and therefore also keeps the overall lead after the 3 first Tour de Ski stages.

Tour de Ski Stage 3: Prediction results and overall results

Posted by Jan Kocbach, 02 Jan 2011@16:40

Mats L hit best with the predictions for todays 3rd stage of the Tour de Ski in Obersdorf, Germany. Mats L hit the jackpot with all top three women correct – Majdic ahead of Kowalczyk and Jacobsen – and also correctly predicted Jönnson as the winner among the men. Geraldo13 was second on the third stage – and therefore also keeps the overall lead after the 3 first Tour de Ski stages.
